Understanding Microsoft Office 365 new features in 2018

OneDrive

Microsoft’s cloud-based storage service gets a new File Restore feature that lets you bring back one or multiple OneDrive for Business files from anytime during the last 30 days. All you have to do is select “Restore OneDrive” from the Settings menu and use a slider to go back to a particular day.

SharePoint

The Move-to command is now available in OneDrive and SharePoint as a preview feature. It suggests locations for you to move files based on parameters such as collaboration patterns, business relationships, contacts, directory, etc. This is particularly useful for sharing files with your teams, publishing documents to a Communication Site, or moving on-premises or third-party data to Office 365.

The Move-to command also provides full metadata protection and version management, but the former feature works only if the column names between the source and destination locations match.

Microsoft Forms

You’re probably familiar with Microsoft Forms, a feature in Office 365 that lets you create surveys and quizzes. What you may not know is that Forms will be getting an Office 365 Admin Center control, which will allow you to specify how forms can be shared outside your organization and establish policies for sending and collecting Form responses.

What’s more, you'll now be able to turn off Forms completely. This will also turn off Form’s sharing feature, which helps limit its availability to just members within your company and only those who have signed in to Office 365.

Microsoft Teams

This group chat software sees several updates. First, you can now “Like” one-on-one or group chat messages, rather than messages in Teams Conversations alone. You can also hide old or inactive chats as well as create hyperlinks in team conversation and chat using the shortcut Ctrl + K. Last but not least, you can now add existing OneNote files to the channel tab instead of having to create a new OneNote tab.

As with previous feature releases, Microsoft has done their homework and listened to user feedback. And while these updates are by no means life-changing, they sure will make life at the office a little easier.
